Overview:
Join us Saturday January 25th 2025 for a field trip to the Tres Rios overbank wetlands west end.
The Tres Rios overbank wetlands are located between 107th Ave and 91st Ave South of Southern in Avondale. This is the Yellow-billed Cuckoo transect that we train our interns on and run in the summer. There will be no Cuckoos but we should get around 50 species. The habitat consists of several ponds with Cottonwood/Willow and a huge Mesquite Bosque to the south. We may also get a chance to see Javelina, muskrats or even a beaver.
Things to Know/Bring:
• It may be chilly in the morning but should warm up fast. Bring extra water, sunscreen and a floppy hat. Shorts and sneakers are fine. Regular cars are fine. This is also a permit area so please get your free permit—they just want name and e mail;
• Get your free permit at https://www.phoenix.gov/waterservices/tresrios/permit
Directions: Parking is South of Southern on 107th Ave. Drive as far south on 107th Ave as you can (~ 1⁄2 mile) and park near the road barrier. Please do not block the farmer’s access roads. Also do not park at 91st Ave as you will not find us.
Difficulty: 2- about 3 miles of hiking on flat dirt roads but mostly in the sun with shade in spots.
