Bird Trip at Tres Rios

Tres Rios Wetlands at 91st Ave. – Phoenix Water Company site.
Friday, November 12th 2021 at 8:00 a.m. Meet in the small parking lot next to the gate. You will be required to attain a parking permit to place on you dashboard. Go to their website to download this easily printable permit: http://www.phoenix.gov/waterservices/tresrios/permit .
Tres Rios Wetlands is considered a Global IBA with over 200 species of birds recorded. The area where we will be walking is a wide flat graded dirt road that follows the wetlands on one side and open fields on the other. We can expect to see and hear Rails, Gallinules, Neo-tropic Cormorants, Yellow-headed Blackbirds and the occasional Osprey, Kingfisher and Red-tailed Hawk. On a recent visit there were American White Pelicans and many Egrets and Heron species.
Bring good walking shoes, water, snacks and sunscreen as there is little shade along the road. Depending on the number of stops along the way, it will be about 2 to 3 hours out to the waterfalls area and back. Please be reminded of COVID protocol from the US CDC as SAS will be observing these measures: go to the latest guidance for personal vehicles at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/daily-life-coping/using-transportation.html#PersonalVehicles. Generally said, on SAS in-person Field Trips, share rides with your family and/or others who have been fully vaccinated. For those who are not fully vaccinated, for everyone’s comfort, drive yourself; if not fully vaccinated but are car-pooling, mask up and maintain social distancing. For the un-vaccinated, the CDC says “get vaccinated”; for those in between 2-shot vaccination protocols and therefore not fully immunized, continue to mask up for these SAS Field Trips. And, for all of us, make sure your vehicle has good ventilation.
