We have an interesting program for you on this coming Wednesday October 12th— two of our members just returned from a birding trip to ETHIOPIA!  Carol Beardmore and Jerry Theis will entertain us with photos and stories of this fabulous adventure.  Please join your fellow bird-watchers for this program and bring your own water!

Carol is a “guru” for Partners in Flight which was begun in 1990 as a group of people interested in stemming the decline of our migratory birds in the US and elsewhere.  PIF is now a multi-national group of interested scientists, wildlife managers, and concerned citizens that has raised the bar of concern, science, and action for our birds.  Carol Beardmore has been involved in PIF since 1991, when she co-founded the Texas working group of PIF and has been involved ever since mainly in the West and Mexico from her base in Phoenix.  Carol has recently received the Partners in Flight National Leadership Award for her long-standing work for migratory birds.  She is currently a valued member of the SAS Board and provides technical support for all our speakers along with Tom Lazzelle.

Jerry has a Ph.D. in Microbiology and was employed at Banner Boswell Medical Center for 42 years, both as Manager of the Microbiology Lab as well as an Oncology Data Specialist in the cancer program.  Since retirement on Dec. 31, 2014, Jerry does NeuroPsych testing for dementia in the Longevity Study at the Banner Sun Health Research Institute.  He is also Chairman of the Chapman Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships to needy students primarily in health related fields of study.  Jerry is also a clinical laboratory inspector and an International Science Fair judge.  From 1996-2002 Jerry was invited to nine foreign countries, from Cuba to China, as a medical consultant for People to People International.  In addition, he has visited 24 countries on birding trips.  Jerry is a former board member of SAS and his favorite bird groups are hummingbirds and night birds.

There will be reports and updates from your Board of Directors also.   If you have any questions, feel free to call Karen at 602-809-3360.
