February 19, 2017 all-day
Santa Cruz Flats
Claudia Kirscher

Journey with us once again, down to Santa Cruz Flats south of Casa Grande. Possible stop along the way will be Arizona City to scope the lake for wintering waterbirds and the occasional rarities that drop in. We will then continue on down Sunland Gin Road to the agricultural fields, a reliable area for wintering raptors including Ferruginous Hawk, Northern Harrier, Red-tailed Hawk, Harlan’s. Prairie Falcon, Merlin, and hopefully Crested Caracara. Other possible sightings include Horned Larks, Meadowlarks, Bendire’s Thrasher, Loggerhead Shrike, and Greater Roadrunner. Sparrows usually abound here and hopefully we will spot Sage, Vesper, Lincoln’s, Brewer’s, Song, Savannah or Grasshopper Sparrows. We will carefuly scope the sod farm areas for Mountain Plover and shorebirds.  Bring scopes.  I have handheld radios. Most birding done either from vehicle or along hard-packed dirt/gravel roads.   This trip will be limited to 2 cars, 8 participants. We will plan to return to the meeting site by 3:00 to 4:00.  Meeting time and site TBA.  Reservations to Claudia Kirscher,   antclaudia at
