The Hassayampa River Preserve is always a peaceful, shady area with lots of trees and water that attracts all sorts of birds year round. There is a small lake surrounded with thick vegetation and cottonwood trees with trails winding around the lake in and out of the greenery. There are also areas of reeds and cattails that attract Red-winged Blackbirds, Pied-billed Grebes, ducks , warblers, Song Sparrows and Common Yellowthroats. The south end of the lake is all open with big trees and always has a Black Phoebe waiting for us. Then there is the desert area east of the lake that contains all the typical desert birds and for some reason one year every mesquite tree had a Lucy’s Warbler.

The Hassayampa River flows through the length of the preserve all year and is part of a three mile section where the river comes above ground and yet up and downstream for miles it is totally dry. It flows at a depth of 3 inches and averages around three feet wide and as a result creates a green oasis of trees in the desert. The northern section has lots of trees that attract Gila Woodpeckers, Northern Flickers, warblers, Summer Tanagers and a number of different hawks. The southern section has more scattered trees and has had Lesser Goldfinches and even Lawrence’s Goldfinches at one time, Oregon Juncos, various sparrows, House Finches, Ash-throated Flycatcher and Black -headed Grosebeaks.

At the Visitor there are hummingbird feeders hanging out front that attract about three different types here. There are also regular bird feeders where you enter from the parking lot that always draw in Cardinals and other seed eaters.

The meeting places will be Fry’s Electronics at 31st Ave and Thunderbird (NE corner of the parking lot at 7:15am) and a possible location in Sun City to be set by the first person to call from there.

Please bring a lunch, Difficulty: Rated 2
