We will be looking for migrants and typical forest birds as we take the trail that goes around the lake. Usually it’s always fun to watch the Osprey come in for their mid-morning brunch. They soar over the lake and suddenly fold their wings and dive to hit the water and lots of times come up with a trout. I’ve had them bomb me with their little trout torpedo before and I’m not sure that they did it on purpose or just accidently lost their grip. For quite a few years there was a Bald Eagle nesting near the lake but I’m not sure that it’s still there.
After we search the lake area we will be going to the Highland Nature Center which is nearby and is another great place to bird. It has a number of trails, hummingbird feeders and a wetland area. There may be an entrance fee of $5 or just a voluntary contribution. I can’t remember for sure.
Dan Bohlmann will be the person to contact for this trip and he will organize car pools from two different meeting spots. One is at the Fry’s Electronics Store at 31st Ave and Thunderbird(NW corner of parking lot) at 6:30am and the second spot at the McDonalds at Carefree Hwy and I17 ( NE Corner ) at 7:00am. We will be meeting Rich at the south end of Lnyx lake at 9:00am. Please bring a lunch. We will probably bird until 1 or 2 PM and get back to Phoenix around 3 or 4 PM. Let me know if you can drive.
We will walk around in both places about one mile total so I would give the trip a difficulty of a 2. If you can’t walk that far you can always elect to sit on a bench and bird from there.
