This area of riparian ponds acts like a magnet to thousands of ducks and shore birds. There are six ponds that are usually full of water and one is lined with cement and has sidewalks on one side and fishing piers and ramps. Only the ducks that like humans and their handouts such as Mallards and Coots show up here. There maybe some herons on the secluded side of this pond but no shore birds or ducks who like privacy. The other ponds have areas of mud flats, reeds and acquatic plants that are filled with shorebirds such as Godwits, Black-necked Stilts, American Avocets, and Yellowlegs. The last time I was there we even saw the creature that we use to hunt for when we were kids at camp – THE SNIPE!! We didn’t realize that it actually existed or for that matter that it was a bird.
In the deeper part of the ponds are always large flocks of ducks such as Pintails, Gadwalls, Shovelers, Wigeons, Ring-necks, Ruddys and Scaups. And among them you’ll always find Teals, Cinnamon, Blue-winged and Green-winged. Then you’ll see what appears like little flocks of insects swarming low around the ponds which are actually referred to as peeps – Western and Least Sandpipers. If you look up you would think you were at an airforce base with all the formations of ducks coming in for a landing. And if you keep looking up you will see different types of Hawks circling overhead intent on selecting a delicious bird for brunch from all the fantastic variety available. Most of the time when I go there I see some type of bird that I haven’t seen for sometime.
