It was marvelous weather for visiting the pond and adjacent desert in this park which is surrounded by dense residential developments. The state has erected a brick wall viewing blind on the edge of the pond which is helpful for handicapped viewers but irritating to birders who are threatened with a sign: " Do not go past this point." Nonetheless the fifteen participants chalked up a good species list.

Sighting the Western Grebe was a special event and the Hooded Merganser provided an elegant addition to the list. Also seen were: Northern Shoveler, American Wigeon, Pied-billed Grebe, Mallard, American Coot, Ruddy Duck, Green Heron, Great Blue Heron, Black-crowned Night Heron, Belted Kingfisher, Say's Phoebe, Black Phoebe, Yellowrumped Warbler, Verdin, White-crowned Sparrow, Abert's Towhee, Gambel's Quail, Anna's and Costa's Hummingbirds, Northern Mockingbird, Rock Dove, and Mourning Dove. Birds heard were: Northern Flicker, Cactus Wren and Curve-billed Thrasher.

The group, led by Carolyn Modeen and assisted by Donna Smith, includedVera Markham, Betty Roberts, Bob McCall, Marge Eckman, Marilyn Poncey,Donna VanPelt, Ian Jeffrey, Mike Harrison, Tom Lazzelle, Bernie Ladouceur, Joy Dolhanczyk, Bea Raymond, and Ellen deCordoba.

This site on 59th Avenue and Melinda Lane in Glendale always is an excellent place to view wintering ducks and is worth a stop.
