Spur Cross Conservation Area
Cave Creek

October 26, 2002
By Eleanore Campbell

The birds were few, but just exploring this natural area which was saved from developers thanks to the people in the local community made it an exciting field trip. Our birding expert was Walter Thurber from Maricopa Audubon and Barbra O'Brien of Carefree whose knowledge of the physical and historical aspects of the area made for a special day. Because Walter was doing an actual bird species count we didn't have to pay the usual $3.00 per person fee.

We nine participants walked in a dry stream bed mostly. It was cool and the birds were not active but we did see: Gila Woodpecker, Common Raven, Say's Phoebe, White-crowned Sparrow, Verdin, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Rock Wren, Gambel's Quail, Loggerhead Shrike, Northern (Red-shafted) Flicker, House Finch, Curve-billed Thrasher, Black-throated Sparrow, and Swallow (sp.)

It was a real treat to see some very vivid petroglyphs up close thanks to Barbra's expertise.
