Pinal Mountain September 27, 2003 By Eleanor Campbell ![]() Greater Pewee Photo by Jim Burns Wild and wonderful was the view
from Pinal Mountain and Signal Peak in the Pinal Mountains south of
Globe, Arizona. Led by Chuck Kangas, the eleven intrepid bird
enthusiasts braved the long, winding, onelane dirt road through several
ecological zones into the COOL elevations of the Tonto National Forest.
The bird population was minimal at the lower desert level, but at the top, amidst the pines and firs, birders were rewarded with some good looks at the Townsend's Warbler, Greater Pewee, Yellow-eyed Junco, and Hairy Woodpecker. Other birds seen were: Red-breasted Nuthatch, White-breasted Nuthatch, Mountain Chickadee, Western Wood Pewee, Northern (Red-shafted) Flicker, House Wren, Western (Cordilleran?) Flycatcher, Scrub Jay, Black-throated Gray Warbler, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Cooper's Hawk, Acorn Woodpecker, Bridled Titmouse, Northern Cardinal, Gila Woodpecker, Common Raven, Great-tailed Grackle, Turkey Vulture, Cactus Wren, House Sparrow, hummingbird (sp.) and hawk (sp.) Participants were: Eleanor Campbell, Joy Dolhanczyk, Harold Henson, Sharon and Olin James, Bea Raymond, Loretta and Chuck Richards, Chuck Richard, and Nancy Woods. It was a great adventure!
