Six of us (Dan Bohlmann, Darlene Gatto, Vera Markham, Donna Smith – leader, George and Maria Wall) headed out on a hot Sun City morning to the Page Springs Fish Hatchery where we hoped to catch a few migrants still in the area. As we walked the trails, we tried to keep in the shade of the trees as much as possible as we chased a Song Sparrow from tree to tree until finally getting a good look at him. We pursued a flash of red in a large tree that turned out to be a Summer Tanager.

After birding, we went to a nearby restaurant where we were able to sit overlooking water down below. It was here that we picked up a few more birds like the Red-winged Blackbird and Northern Rough-winged Swallows. It was also fun to observe a Northern Cardinal trying to fight his reflection in a nearby window.

After eating, we stopped at the Oak Creek Winery and a couple of us sampled their wine. Then we moved on down the road to a fruit picking farm. While picking peaches, apricots, plums and nectarines; a Scott’s Oriole was seen. By then it was in the afternoon and time to head back home.

The 37 birds seen or heard were Great Blue Heron, Green Heron, Mallard, Turkey Vulture, Common Black- Hawk Rock Common Raven, Pigeon, Mourning Dove, Eurasian-collared Dove, Anna’s Hummingbird, Gila Woodpecker (h), Black Phoebe, Western Kingbird, Tropical Kingbird, Northern Rough-winged Swallow, Bewick’s Wren, American Robin, Northern Mockingbird, Phainopepla, Yellow-rumped Warbler (Audubon’s), Yellow Warbler, Yellow-breasted Chat, Common Yellowthroat, Summer Tanager, Abert’s Towhee, Song Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow, Northern Cardinal, Red-winged Blackbird, Great-tailed Grackle, Brown-headed  Cowbird, Bullock’s Oriole, Hooded Oriole, Scott’s Oriole, House Finch, Lesser Goldfinch and House Sparrow.
