Five strong-willed and sweaty birders (Marshall Esty, Shirley Fackleman, Cathy Huffman, Annie Teff and George Wall) braved the heat of the morning to see some birds. The first stop was in Peoria to look for the Burrowing Owls recently translocated to an area off Plaza del Rio and we were rewarded with two outside their burrows. We then stopped at the El Mirage Ephemeral Pond where several birds were sighted in the small amount of water that remained – most notably, the American Avocet. Then we went on to P.I.R. area where we added to our bird list and were able to get good looks at immature/juvenile Common Moorhens. By 9 a.m., the heat was getting to us and we headed toward home.

The 32 birds seen were: Pied-billed Grebe, Double-crested Cormorant, Great Blue Heron, Great Egret, Snowy Egret, Green Heron, Black-crowned Night Heron, Turkey Vulture, Gambel’s Quail, Common Moorhen, American Coot, Black-necked Stilt, American Avocet, Killdeer, Rock Pigeon, White-winged Dove, Mourning Dove, Burrowing Owl, un-IDd Hummingbird, Black Phoebe, Northern Rough-winged Swallow, Cliff Swallow, Wren (Bewick’s or Marsh), Black-tailed Gnatcatcher, probable Common Yellowthroat, Abert’s Towhee, Red-winged Blackbird, Yellow-headed Blackbird, Great-tailed Grackle, Brownheaded Cowbird, House Finch and House Sparrow.
