Hassayampa River Preserve May 14, 2004 By Eleanor Campbell
"It was a beautiful day to bird
with wonderful weather and mulberries ripe to attract birds and
javelina," said Carolyn Modeen and Donna Smith who led the Hassayampa
River Preserve field trip that attracted 18 people to the site.
The Nature Conservancy's preserve with cottonwoods and willows and a variety of shrubs along the river is a stopping-off place for migrants and nesting site for many species. Birds seen were: Green Heron, Great Egret, Mallard, Turkey Vulture, Red-tailed Hawk, American Kestrel, Gambel's Quail, American Coot, Spotted Sandpiper, Rock Pigeon, Mourning Dove, White-winged Dove, Black-chinned Hummingbird, Anna's Hummingbird, Ladder-backed Woodpecker, Gila Woodpecker, Western Wood Pewee, Hammond's Flycatcher, Black Phoebe, Vermillion Flycatcher, Willow Flycatcher, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Tropical Kingbird, Bell's Vireo, Warbling Vireo, Violet-green Swallow, Verdin, European Starling, Cedar Waxwing, Phainopepla, Yellow Warbler, Wilson's Warbler, Yellow-breasted Chat (heard), Summer Tanager, Western Tanager, Abert's Towhee, Black-headed Grosbeak, Northern Cardinal, Blue Grosbeak, Indigo Bunting, Red-winged Blackbird, Yellow-headed Blackbird, Great-tailed Grackle, Brown-headed Cowbird, Hooded Oriole, Bullock's Oriole, House Finch, Lesser Goldfinch, and House Sparrow. There was one mulberry-munching javelina and one black and white striped King Snake. Participants were: Vera Markham, Betty Roberts, Cathy Hubbman, Bob McCall, Doris Hill, Dean and Joan Luehrs, Marshall Esty, Richard Theobald, Jan Harding, Barbara Walls, Bets Hobin, Carroll Pulis, Robert Lin, Frank and Mary Montgomery, Roxanna and Neil Vacca, and Ron Sigler.
