Hassayampa River Preserve Wednesday, April 23, 2003 By Eleanor Campbell
Lorraine Thompson, who has been a
volunteer at the Nature Conservancy's Preserve near Wickenburg for many
years, led the group of eleven birders. A Zone-tailed Hawk and a
Red-shouldered Hawk soared over before the gang had left the parking
lot.
It was a cool, sunny day and participants enjoyed identifying the many flowers along the paths as well as the birds. A rattlesnake made an appearance near the picnic area just before lunchtime. The birds seen and heard were: Pied-billed Grebe, Green Heron, Turkey Vulture, Red-shouldered Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk, Cooper's Hawk, Zone-tailed Hawk, Gambel's Quail, American Coot, Mallard, White-winged Dove, Mourning Dove, Inca Dove, Black-chinned Hummingbird, Anna's Hummingbird, Gila Woodpecker, Ladder-backed Woodpecker, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Bell's Vireo, Verdin, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, European Starling, Phainopepla, Yellow Warbler, Audubon's Yellow-rumped Warbler, Wilson's Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, SIX male Summer Tanagers, Song Sparrow, Lincoln's Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow, Northern Cardinal, Red-winged Blackbird, Brown-headed Cowbird, House Finch, Lesser Goldfinch, Hooded Oriole, House Sparrow. Participants were: Loretta and Chuck Richards, Eleanor Campbell, Chuck Richard, Helen Jean Story, Linda Dion, Donna Smith, Marilyn Pinery, RickiCarlson, Alice Brawley-Chesworth, and Dan Bohlmann.
