This was a joint Birders’ Anonymous and Sonoran Audubon Society field trip. The group was led by Betty Baugus with assistance from Dick Fogle. Other participants included Dan Bohlmann, Marge Eckman, Mike Fujimoto, John Godfried, Ian Jeffrey, Marilyn Lauterbach, Carol Maroney, Carolyn Modeen, Chuck & Loretta Richards, Larry & Audrey Schander and George Wall.

The traffic was extremely heavy probably due to Spring Break and so it took over an hour and a half to get there, but it was worth it. The day was gorgeous with flowers blooming and the birds showed up. After stopping at a few spots including Coon’s Bluff, we ended up at the Granite Reef Dam area where we all ate lunch.

The birds seen were Pied-billed Grebe, Neotropic Cormorant, Great Blue Heron, Great Egret, Turkey Vulture, American Wigeon, Mallard, Lesser Scaup, Osprey, Cooper’s Hawk, Harris’s Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk, American Kestrel, Gambel’s Quail, American Coot, Killdeer, Spotted Sandpiper, Mourning Dove, Rock Pigeon, Anna’s Hummingbird, Belted Kingfisher, Gila Woodpecker, Ladder-backed Woodpecker, Black Phoebe, Say’s Phoebe, Vermilion Flycatcher, Northern Rough-winged Swallow, Cliff Swallow, Loggerhead Shrike, Phainopepla, Cactus Wren, American Rock Wren, Bewick’s Wren, Northern Mockingbird, Curve-billed Thrasher, American Robin, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Verdin, Common Raven, European Starling, Northern Cardinal, Orange-crowned Warbler, Lucy’s Warbler, Yellowrumped Warbler, Hutton’s Vireo, Lesser Goldfinch, House Finch, House Sparrow, Bullock’s Oriole, Red-winged Blackbird, Great-tailed Grackle and Brewer’s Blackbird. 52 species were seen in all. These included birds seen on the way to and from the area. More birds would probably have been seen except most of the spots visited had a lot of people – again probably due to the Spring Break.
