What a great morning to head out of the valley to the high roads of the Mogollon Rim. As we left the parking lot, a flock of Canada Geese flew by to lead the way out of Sun City. Then as the sun was starting to come up, three  Lesser Nighthawks flew over heralding the start of a new day.

Our first stop was in Camp Verde where we were hoping to see the  Scissor-tailed Flycatcher that had been reported. No such Luck; so we headed on to Forest Road 300 where we found the temperature to be in the mid 60s. Just before we turned onto our road, a Cooper’s Hawk waved us in. We did very little walking (thank goodness) as mostly we drove along the road and stopped to listen. When we heard birds, we got out of our cars to look and we saw some nice birds. Probably the most spectacular display was standing there in the trees with three to four American Three-toed Woodpeckers banging away in very close proximity to us while at about the same time a Red-faced Warbler and a Painted Redstart took a bath in some standing water a few feet away.

On the way out of the area, we stopped at Potato Lake; however, the only bird we saw there was a Great Blue Heron.

As we were driving home, a Red-tailed Hawk waved goodbye to us.

Here are the 34 species that were seen or heard: Great Blue Heron, Canada Goose, Turkey Vulture, Cooper’s Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk, Rock Pigeon, Mourning Dove, White-winged Dove, Northern Pigmy Owl (h), Lesser Nighthawk, Anna’s Hummingbird, Broad-tailed Hummingbird, Rufous Hummingbird, Acorn Woodpecker, Hairy Woodpecker, American Three-toed Woodpecker, Northern Flicker, House Wren, Western Bluebird, American Robin, Mountain Chickadee, Pygmy Nuthatch, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Whitebreasted Nuthatch, Brown Creeper, Common Raven, House Sparrow, Warbling Vireo, House Finch, Virginia’s Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Red-faced Warbler, Painted Redstart, and Dark-eyed Junco.

The participants were Marcia Grina, Vera Markham, Chuck and Loretta Richards, Donna Smith (Leader) and George Wall.
