A joint Birders’ Anonymous and Sonoran Audubon Society Birding trip to Flagstaff took place on Sunday & Monday 18-19 July, 2004. It was originally scheduled for a Monday day trip to the Flagstaff Arboretum, but everyone that participated decided to go a day earlier and do a little extra birding. Participants included Marge Eckman, Dwayne & Edna Fink, Dick & Ann Fogle, Chuck & Phyllis Kangas, Jane McNeill and Nancy Reed. Dick Fogle was the leader.

The Flagstaff Arboretum is always a pleasant place to bird. It’s also a good place to look at all their plantings and observe the numerous butterflies fluttering around. We were able to get good looks at the Cordilleran Flycatcher which nests at the arboretum.

The group not only visited the arboretum but also the Kachina Wetlands. Nancy Reed invited all us to eat our lunches on her back porch where we could look out at her numerous bird feeders and at several small ponds. There everyone was able to see a variety of birds including Hairy Woodpeckers and American Robins taking baths in a small pond within a few feet of the porch. Numerous Pygmy Nuthatches came to the hanging feeders a few feet from our heads.

The 35 birds seen on the entire trip were the Pied-billed Grebe, Mallard, Ruddy Duck, American Coot, Turkey Vulture, Cooper’s Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk, Rock Pigeon, Mourning Dove, Broad-tailed Hummingbird, Rufous Hummingbird, Hairy Woodpecker, Cordilleran Flycatcher, Steller’s Jay, Common Raven, Violet-green Swallow, Barn Swallow, Western Bluebird, American Robin, Pygmy Nuthatch, White-breasted Nuthatch, Mountain Chickadee, Western Bluebird, Varied Thrush, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Black-headed Grosbeak, Red-winged Blackbird, Yellow-headed Blackbird, House Finch, Pine Siskin, Lesser Goldfinch, Dark-eyed Junco, Chipping Sparrow, Vesper Sparrow and House Sparrow.

The trip was very enjoyable since it was quite a few degrees cooler in Flagstaff than in Phoenix. We enjoyed watching the rain storm on Sunday afternoon. It’s remarkable how it will pour rain for a half hour in Flagstaff. There’ll be water all over and one half hour after the rain the water has disappeared.
