Estrella Mountain Park
November 19, 2002
By George Wall
Seven of
us (Marge Eckman, Pat Kifer, Vera Markham, Carol Maroney, Lois
Peterson, Donna Smith & George Wall) went on the field trip.
It was a very nice morning and we saw a number of birds – Northern
Harrier, Red-tailed Hawk, Gambel’s Quail, Mourning Dove, Greater
Roadrunner, Anna’s Hummingbird, Costa’s Hummingbird, Gila Woodpecker,
Red-naped Sapsucker, Gilded Flicker, Say’s Phoebe, Common Raven,
Loggerhead Shrike, Northern Mockingbird, Curve-billed Thrasher, Cactus
Wren, Verdin, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, House Finch, House Sparrow,
Yellow-rumped Warbler, White-crowned Sparrow, Abert’s Towhee, Northern
Cardinal and Great-tailed Grackle for a total of 25 species.
Four of us continued on to the El Mirage Pond that we found to be quite
low with lots of mud flats. This seemed fine to the birds that we found
there. We saw a Green-winged Teal, Mallard, Northern Pintail, Great
Egret, Ferrginous Hawk, American Kestrel, Sora, Common Moorhen,
American Coot, Greater Yellowlegs, Long-billed Dowitcher, Western
Sandpiper, Black-necked Stilt, Ring-billed Gull, Rock Dove, and Western
Medowlark - a total of 17 more species.
After getting back to the Sun Bowl parking lot and dropping off 2, I
took Vera Markham to drop her off and on the way there we saw a Common
Blackhawk sitting on a pole right near the road on 111th Avenue in Sun
City.
A great day!
