Bob Cirillo, Vera Markham, Darlene Gatto, Bud Larkin, Barb Meding, and Donna Smith (leader) went to Boyce Thompson Arboretum State Park and had a great trip.  We saw both the Yellow-bellied and Red-naped Sapsuckers.  Seeing them both togth er made it easy to spot the differences between the two birds.  The Red-naped Sapsucker has a distinctive black and white pattern on the back of its wings.  The Yellow-bellied had a blurry black and white pattern on its wings and no red nape.  After we finished birding at the arboretum we drove to Keirnan Lake (27 miles southeast) where we saw the Red-necked Grebe.

Sightings were:  Pied-billed Grebe, Re-necked Grebe, Eared Grebe, Double-crested Cormorant, Mallard, Northern Shoveler, Redhead, Ring-necked Duck, Lesser Scaup, Bufflehead, Ruddy Duck, American Kestrel, unidentified hawk species, Common Moorhen, American Coot, Rock Pigeon, Mourning Dove, Broad-tailed Hummingbird, Anna's Hummingbird, Gila Woodpecker, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Red-naped Sapsucker, Black Phoebe, Says Phoebe, Plumbeous Vireo, Common Raven, Verdin, Cactus Wren, Rock Wren, Bewick's Wren, House Wren, Marsh Wren, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Hermit Thrush, Curve-billed Thrasher (h), Yellow-rumped Warbler, Spotted Towhee, Abert's Towhee, Black-throated Sparrow, Song Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow, Northern Cardinal, Red-winged Blackbird, Great-tailed Grackle, House Finch, Lesser Goldfinch and House Sparrow.
