Box Bar - Tonto National Forest

The group got an early start and reached the Box Bar shortly after 7:00. The weather was ideal with sunshine, moderate temperatures and little wind. The Verde River was running well as the group birded through the cottonwoods, mesquite, willows and tamarisk.

The group saw a total of 35 birds. They were: Great Blue Heron, Turkey Vulture, Bald eagle, Harris’s Hawk, Red-tailed hawk, Spotted Sandpiper, Morning Dove, Anna’s Hummingbird, Gila Woodpecker, Ladder-backed Woodpecker, Western Wood-Pewee, Hammond’s Flycatcher, Black Phoebe, Say’s Phoebe, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Western Kingbird, Plumbeous Vireo, Cassin’s Vireo, Warbling Vireo, Common Raven, Swallow, Bewick’s Wren, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Northern Mockingbird, Phainopepla, Lucy’s Warbler, Yellow Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Black-throated Gray Warbler, Abert’s Towhee, Brewer’s Sparrow, Song sparrow, Lincoln’s Sparrow, Northern Cardinal and Great-tailed Grackle.

Participants were: Richard Theobald and Jan Harding ( from England), Andrea Nesbitt, Fran Baughman, Susanne Drury, Tom Lazzelle, Dan Bohlmann and Chuck and Loretta Richards.
